George W. Carden

June 29, 1927 ~ June 15, 2017 (age 89) 89 Years Old


George W. Carden, 89, of Plainville passed away on Thursday, June 15, 2017 at the Hospital of Central CT in New Britain. He was the loving husband for 62 years to Eunice (Whittaker) Carden.

George was born on June 29, 1927 in Harrisburg, PA, son to the late John and Marie (Kaan) Carden. He grew up in Sharon, MA and went on to attend Saint John’s College in Maryland.  A proud American, George joined the United States Coast Guard during WWII and later joined the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict, serving 11 months in both branches of the military.  George was employed as a certified car mechanic by Sher’s Automotive Center in Hartford for many years. 

George enjoyed sailing and hiking trips with his wife and family. He was a lifetime member of the Appalachian Mountain Club and a longtime member of Mystic Seaport. An experienced pistol shooter for over 60 years, George was a former range officer and treasurer of the Colt’s pistol team. He was involved in organized pistol target shooting leagues in Connecticut, and attained status as a sharpshooter. George was an avid reader, a handyman, and a talented croquet player. George also volunteered his time at the Plainville Senior Center teaching members basic computer knowledge. He will be dearly missed by his family and by all who knew him.

In addition to his wife, Eunice, George is survived by his son, Christopher Carden and his partner, Rebecca O’Brien, of Newton, MA; his daughter, Susan Carden-Flicker and her husband, Steven, of Melbourne, FL; his sister-in-law, Marcia Carden and her children, Jeffrey and Diane, of NH; and his step-sister, Nancy Colborn, of NH. He was predeceased by his brother, Richard Carden.

Funeral Services will be held privately at the convenience of the family. Bailey Funeral Home, 48 Broad St., Plainville has care of arrangements.
