Eleanor H. (Herrick) Gates

Eleanor H. Gates, 93 of Plainville, formerly of New Britain CT, passed away Sunday January 7, 2018 at the Hospital of Central Connecticut in New Britain. She was the wife of the late George L. Gates, who she married on October 25, 1953 at Danby Four Corners, in Danby, VT.

Eleanor was born September 21, 1924 in Danby, VT, the daughter of the late Harris Otis and Anna Agnes (Twine) Herrick and has been a longtime New Britain, and Plainville resident. She grew up in Vermont and loved crocheting and made many handkerchiefs for her family and friends. Eleanor enjoyed playing the piano and harmonica and was proud to have learned both instruments by ear. She also loved traveling with her daughter and sister.

She leaves her daughter Jill Gates-Paz and her husband Randall of Plainville, her son, Marvin Gates of Danby, VT and Jerry Smith, her grandchildren, Hannah Paz and Lillian Paz, her niece, Laurie Thomas and her husband Robert of Rutland VT, and a lifelong family friend, Robert Spellman of Bloomfield CT. Eleanor was predeceased by her sister, Laura Corey of Danby.

Funeral services in celebration of Eleanor’s life will be held Thursday at 12:00 p.m. at the Faith Bible Church 168 Unionville Avenue in Plainville CT. Burial will be held in the spring in at the Scottsville Cemetery in Danby, VT. Friends and family may gather at the church on Thursday morning January 11, 2018 from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 12:00 p.m.
