Gordon Granger McCann of Plainville passed away on January 11, 2021. He was born in Hartford on March 5, 1932. He was the son of the late Herbert and Bessie (Shellington) McCann. He was a descendant of Gideon Granger who served as Postmaster General in President Thomas Jefferson's administration (1801-1809). Gordon's early years were spent in Windsor Locks. In 1945, he moved to Plainville.
For 37 years (1950-1987) he was employed as a supervisor in the Bond Underwriting Department of the Aetna Casualty & Surety Company of Hartford. He was a member of the Aetna Life Men's Club. From 1952-1954 he served in the United States Army, taking basic training with the 101st Airborne Division ("Screaming Eagles") at Camp Breckinridge, KY. In 1953 he was assigned to Fort Holabird in Baltimore, MD and in 1954 he was reassigned to the Pentagon at Fort Myers, Washington, DC.
He was an active member of the Plainville Congregational Church, having served on the Board of Christian Education and the Board of Deacons. In 1975 he was recognized as a Licensed Lay Minister in the United Church of Christ (Congregational). He served the Plainville church for many years, dating back to 1945. He was a member of the chancel choir for many years. He was also a member of the Robert E. Collins Post #131 of Hartford (American Legion) and the New Haven Railroad Historical and Technical Association. He was a sustaining member of the Republican Party.
He is predeceased by three sisters, Barbara McCann, Mrs. Marion M. Gray and Mrs. Marjorie M. Bergeron, one brother, Donald S. McCann, a sister-in-law, Gertrude McCann, a nephew David McCann and a niece, Barbara Fitzmaurice. He is survived by three nieces: Carol Kaine of Plainville, Beverly Brazee of Spanaway, WA and Kathy Gragnolati of Windsor Locks, and two nephews: Joel McCann of Windsor Locks and Donald McCann of Chaplin.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2021 at 11:00 am at Grove Cemetery in Windsor Locks. A memorial service at the Plainville Congregational Church will be held at a later date to be announced.
