Alcide J. Ayotte

Alcide J. Ayotte passed away on January 18, 2018, at Shady Oaks Assisted Living in Bristol, CT after a short illness. He was born on November 27, 1919, in St. Agatha, a rural farming community in northern Maine to Josephel and Marie (Albert) Ayotte along with his nine siblings.

In his early years he helped with the family farm and took an interest in all things mechanical, developing a passion for building things much to the delight of his family and friends. As a teenager, he enrolled in the Civilian Conservation Corps, which helped America through the Great Depression.

He later enlisted in the U.S. Army in WW II, AAA Gun Division, Fifth army, and became a cannoneer with the anti-aircraft artillery division touring Algiers, Tunisia, Italy, Germany, Austria, Bavaria, where he helped liberate the Dachau concentration camp, and France.

After his service, he married the love of his life, Gisele Soucy, and moved his family to New Britain, CT. He was employed at Marlin Rockwell for 33 years, building his own home in Plainville, and then retired in 1983.

Alcide enjoyed fishing, puttering around his garage, playing cards, and get togethers with his large family, traveling, but most of all, life. He was a gentle and generous man with many talents, always dropping everything to help someone in need - a true jack of all trades.

He is predeceased by his wife of 67 years Gisele Soucy, and his youngest daughter Rosemarie Ayotte Dubois. Alcide was the last surviving sibling of his 9 brothers and sisters, Cora, Leonide, Lawrence, Cecile, Claire, Annette, Aurore, Yvette, and Hilda.

He is survived by his daughter Lisette (Ayotte) Steben, her husband Richard Steben, his granddaughters, Jill Gautreaux and Monique Hebert, His two sons, Gerald Ayotte and Daniel Ayotte along with Daniel’s wife Denise (Brousseau), and two grandsons, Sean and Neal Ayotte. He also leaves three great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Shady Oaks Assisted Living for making the last months of his life so peaceful and enjoyable.

Calling hours will be at Bailey Funeral Home, 48 Broad St., in Plainville, CT on Monday, January 22nd, from 6pm to 8 pm. The Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Mercy Church, 94 Broad St., in Plainville, on Tuesday, January 23rd at 11:30 am. Everybody is asked to meet directly at church. Full military honors will be accorded following mass.  Burial will be at the convenience of the family in the spring. In lieu of flowers, Memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 2075 Silas Deane Hwy, Rocky Hill, CT 06067.
