John R. Stitcher, Jr., 72, of Plainville, CT, formerly of Cumberland, passed away after a brief illness on Wednesday, July 2, 2014.
Born in Cumberland on June 15, 1942, he was one of six children to the late John R. Stitcher, Sr., and Lucille (Shives) Stitcher. Raised and educated in Cumberland, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 20, proudly serving his country for more than six years during Vietnam. He relocated to Connecticut, where he worked as a welder for Pratt & Whitney, from where he retired. An outdoors enthusiast, John enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was an avid bowler.
He leaves his sister and caretaker, Janet Labbe of Plainville, CT with whom he made his home; his sisters, Caroline Kemp, Angela McKenzie, and Shirley Barnabei, all of MD; his daughter, Julie Desmine and step-daughter Lisa Bugren, both of Bristol, CT; and several nieces and nephews, including his niece Paris Labbe, with whom he shared a special bond. He was predeceased by his sister, Joanne Brown.
Honoring John’s wishes, services will be held privately. Burial will be held at a later date at the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery. Bailey Funeral Home, Plainville CT is assisting the family with arrangements.
